Visitor: Lou Russo – possible future CC member?
No quorum, but we did do some business:
1. Write-up About Doug Tolderlund
Doug Tolderlund was a past chairman of the Conservation Commission. Ellie will ask Merve to write something for Old Lyme Events and possibly for Lymeline.
2. Tom Scherer has been reappointed for a 3-year term
Good.
3. Janice Kraus becomes a new member
Janice Kraus has lived in Old Lyme for twenty years. She recently retired from teaching in Clinton, and wanted to become involved in town open space and conservation activities. She has been sworn in as a member of the Conservation Commission.
4. Deer Signs
Ellie said there are no Deer Crossing signs on 156 heading west. Ted said it probably isn’t useful to put the mileage on the signs, since deer can cross 156 almost anywhere. Ellie asked who is responsible for the signs. Ted said it’s the State. Ellie said there should be at least one facing traffic traveling west on 156. Ellie proposes we write a letter to the State asking for another sign.
5. Pick up After Your Pet
Ellie will write a letter to Martha and the Health Department about a town ordinance posting signs reminding people to pick up after their pets. The beach is already posted, but it won’t hurt to remind people walking on open space property. White Sands/Griswold Point area is heavily used by dog walkers, as well as Watch Rock Park. We need to get signs posted.
6. Recycling Truck(s)
Ted and Ellie said the recycling truck spreads recyclables along the roadsides. Ted said this happens because they don’t put up the sides after dumping container contents into the truck. It was mentioned that the men working the truck throw people’s recycling bins into the woods. The recycling team is employed by the Town. Ellie suggested we write a letter to the selectmen and the Public Works Department.
7. 2008 Meeting Dates
Ellie will send Irene a list of Conservation Commission meeting dates for 2008. We agreed on the following dates:
Jan 2, Feb 6, Mar 5, April 2, May 7, June 4, July 2, Aug 6, Sep 3, Oct 1, Nov 5, Dec 3
8. Identifying Properties for Open Space
Ellie will set up a meeting with Diana and Mike to go over maps to identify properties of interest for open space.
9. CACIWC Handout
Ellie handed out copies of The Habitat discussing how to make site walks count. Ted asked Ellie to contact CACIWC and other local agencies to bring us up to date on the latest wetland maps for Old Lyme. Ellie said she would ask Janet Bechtel to request the latest A2 surveys in GIS format. Ted will add new wetland information to the town GIS maps.
